About Us

James Lunsford and Jack Behrend were the band directors at Fairfax, Virginia’s James W. Robinson Secondary School from 1971 to 1980. But that doesn’t even begin to tell the story of how they were respected, feared and beloved by hundreds of students whose lives were enriched on the marching field and off.

A group of Robinson band alumni established the Lunsford/Behrend Scholarship Fund in 2006 after reuniting at a memorial service for James Lunsford, who died in late 2005. Jack Behrend died in 1986.

The scholarship is dedicated to providing funding to deserving Robinson students to pursue higher education while staying involved in music.

“Jim Lunsford and Jack Behrend knew how to have fun with us and encourage us, but they also knew how to chew us out when we needed it. This scholarship is a way to honor their memories as well as to reward outstanding participation in the fine program here at Robinson.”
